Buying a Refurbished PS5 or Xbox Series X: The Checklist

Three terms that get thrown around interchangeably on product pages. Worth untangling.

Used means the device had a previous owner. That's the whole claim. In a private sale, a seller is allowed to exclude the statutory warranty entirely, and typically the listing says so.

Refurbished means a commercial retailer has put the device through a defined inspection and reconditioning process. rebuy says its own process runs to up to 280 checkpoints per device and advertises a three-year warranty on electronics. That's the retailer's own published figure rather than an independently audited one, so read it as a claim. Still a process a private seller doesn't have.

Certified refurbished is the manufacturers' own label. Sony writes that every certified refurbished unit goes through the same functional testing as a new PlayStation product and works like new. Microsoft's equivalent runs along similar lines: a certified refurbished Xbox is inspected, cleaned, repaired and tested by Microsoft technicians, brought up to current system software, and repackaged with its accessories.

The practical difference from a third-party refurbisher is genuine parts. In exchange you get thinner availability, usually a 12-month manufacturer warranty, and in Germany specifically, console availability through the OEM programmes that lags well behind the US.

Here's where it gets concrete. Three retailers, three definitions of the same words.

Refurbed is the most transparent of the group. Its condition page defines "very good" as wear that only becomes visible from 30 cm away. A measurable rule you can actually check once the box is on your table.

Back Market uses similar grade names but doesn't publish an equally hard centimetre figure in the same prominent spot. Research around the platform turns up a looser standard of roughly 50 cm. Honestly, I wouldn't lean on that number. I'd read the condition text in the specific listing instead, because on Back Market the seller is a vetted third party rather than the platform itself. More on why that matters shortly.

rebuy runs four bands from "like new" down to "heavily used" and describes them verbally rather than with a fixed viewing distance.

All figures as of 2 September 2026. Retailers change their terms more often than you'd expect, so if you're reading this six months from now, the linked pages are worth a click.

Cosmetic condition and mechanical condition are two separate axes

And now the point almost nobody spells out: all three retailers guarantee full function regardless of the cosmetic grade. Which means the grade tells you nothing about how many hours the analogue sticks on the bundled controller have already done. Nothing about how much work the Blu-ray drive's laser has already put in either.

A console graded "like new" can have a case without a single scratch and still ship with a controller whose stick starts drifting four months later.

Quick answer: The condition grade rates the housing and what you can see. It does not rate wear on moving parts. So a functional test of your own, run right after unboxing, matters regardless of which tier is printed on the invoice.

Before you buy a refurbished PS5, it's worth knowing the things that matter only for this console.

Disc or Digital Edition, and why one isn't the budget version

The two most-searched modifiers around the PS5 are "with drive" and "without drive". There's real confusion behind that.

Both variants share identical internals according to gameswirtschaft.de: same processor, same graphics unit, same SSD. The only functional difference is the Blu-ray drive the Digital Edition lacks, which also makes it lighter and slimmer.

So a Digital Edition isn't a stripped-down or lesser PS5. It's a separate factory SKU. That roughly 100 euro price gap reflects missing hardware, not reduced quality.

For a second-hand purchase that has a nice side effect: the Digital Edition has one fewer moving part to wear out. No drive, no drive failure. If you buy digitally anyway, it's mechanically the simpler machine.

At asgoodasnew, a PlayStation 5 Slim Digital Edition was listed at 529 euros on 2 September 2026, flagged as new.

On a disc model, I'd want the listing to confirm the drive was tested, and then I'd test it at home with a disc I know reads reliably. A drive that only misbehaves with certain media won't necessarily show up in a quick visual inspection at a warehouse.

Stick drift: the wear item no grade captures

The DualSense is the part of the bundle most likely to cause grief. According to iFixit, the real culprit behind stick drift is worn graphene on the potentiometer "98% of the time". iFixit describes joysticks as components with a known life expectancy whose failure is predictable rather than exceptional.

Translated: drift isn't a defect in the sense of something breaking. It's ordinary wear that arrives eventually. On a controller that already had an owner, part of that life is already spent. And no condition grade captures it.

So here's what I'd run through the day the box arrives:

• Rotate both sticks slowly through a full circle and watch the input readout in the accessories settings

• Let go of both sticks and do nothing for 20 seconds. If the camera creeps or the cursor wanders, that's drift.

• Press every button and both triggers, checking the adaptive triggers for even resistance

• Charge the controller fully once and get a rough feel for runtime

• And the one that always gets forgotten: check that the controller re-pairs cleanly after you've unlinked it from the previous owner's account

Find drift inside the return window and it's a clean reason to send it back. After that it becomes a warranty question, and whether the controller counts as an accessory or as part of the console sits in each retailer's own terms. Better asked before you buy than after.

Buy a refurbished Xbox Series X and the focus shifts. The Series X has a reputation for being mechanically less temperamental, but two things exist here that don't on the PS5 side.

First, the Digital Edition. Microsoft also sells the Series X in a drive-less variant. Same compute, same internal storage, no Blu-ray slot. If you're buying a used Xbox Series X and have a disc collection on the shelf, the listing needs reading carefully to work out which variant is actually being sold. The product photos look more alike than anyone would like.

Second, the storage expansion slot on the back. That's the port for the proprietary Storage Expansion Card, the only expansion that matches the internal SSD's speed. It's a physical contact, and physical contacts wear. If you own an expansion card or plan to, the test is quick: card in, console restart, storage confirmed in settings. If you don't own one, a torch and a look for bent pins is still better than nothing.

Then the items that apply to both platforms: complete accessories (power cable, HDMI cable, controller), no leftover accounts from the previous owner, current system software.

On 2 September 2026 a 1TB Xbox Series X was listed at asgoodasnew for 709 euros, graded like new.

And since this is a good moment for honesty: that's not a bargain. A brand new Series X costs less than that in plenty of weeks at plenty of retailers. Refurbished isn't automatically cheaper. It's cheaper when you compare, which is the entire reason price comparison exists. We don't sell anything here. We put what the retailers are charging side by side.

The section most guides handle in one sentence. It's also the reason a refurbished device is safer than a classifieds listing in the first place.

Refurbished consoles are legally classified as used goods. And for used goods, euroconsumatori.org explains that EU and German law permit the two-year statutory warranty to be shortened to one year. The catch is that a retailer may only do this if it's explicitly agreed. If nothing in the terms or the checkout flow says so, two years stands. Running separately from that: the 14-day right of withdrawal on any online purchase from a commercial seller, whether the item is new, used or refurbished. Some retailers go beyond it, and rebuy for instance states 21 days. What a lot of people only find out at the point of returning something: who actually pays for return shipping isn't handled the same way everywhere.

Quick answer: A refurbished console comes with at least 12 months of statutory warranty, often 24, plus a 14-day withdrawal right on a commercial online purchase. An advertised retailer warranty stacks on top of those rights rather than replacing them.

Marketplace or direct retailer: who your contract is actually with

This is the detail hardly anyone knows, and it decides who you write to when something goes wrong.

Stiftung Warentest, the German consumer testing institute, tested nine providers, run October 2022 to January 2023, published February 2023. It split them explicitly into two models: direct retailers who sell their own stock, and marketplaces where vetted third-party sellers do. On a marketplace, the individual seller is your contract partner, not the platform. In that assessment rebuy came top among direct retailers at 2.2, Back Market top among platforms at 1.8.

That test used smartphones, not consoles. So it says nothing about how well anyone reconditions a PS5 specifically. About process quality and contract structure, though, it says a fair amount, and neither changes just because the device is bigger.

In practice: with Refurbed and Back Market a complaint lands with the seller behind the listing. With rebuy and asgoodasnew it lands with the shop itself. Both work, the route just differs, and on a marketplace the individual seller's ratings are worth two minutes of your time. Shop for a used PS5 or a used Xbox Series X for more than a day and you'll notice: prices move daily. What follows is a dated snapshot, not a promise.

What's hiding in that table and rarely gets written down: the spread within one platform is wider than the spread between the two platforms. Two PS5 units at the same grade can sit 80 euros apart at two different retailers. Which makes the sensible order of operations decide-grade-and-warranty-first, compare-price-second. Not the other way round.

Sony's own programme gives you the reference point. In the US, PlayStation Direct sells the certified refurbished PS5 at $399 against $499 new, and the Digital Edition at $349 against $449. A flat $100 discount either way. When a listing offers noticeably less distance from the new price than that, I read it as a signal to keep looking.

The retailer assigned the grade. The functional test is yours. Ideally the same day, while the withdrawal window is still open.

1. Compare the housing against the tier you ordered. Refurbed's "very good" means visible from 30 cm, so stand 30 cm away.
2. Power it on, update the system software, confirm factory state. No unfamiliar accounts, no unfamiliar Wi-Fi networks in the list.
3. Listen to the fan at idle and under load. Even airflow noise is normal, grinding or pulsing isn't.
4. Work through sticks and buttons as described above.
5. On a disc model, insert a disc, let it fully load, eject, insert again.
6. On the Xbox, the expansion slot and every USB port get checked with hardware you know works.
7. Run a graphically demanding game for 30 minutes and watch for thermal throttling or crashes.

If something doesn't match the description, photograph it and report it in writing rather than by phone. Inside the withdrawal window you don't even need to give a reason. And if the console genuinely arrives faulty, we've laid out the right order of steps for a defective device.

Consoles are one of the few categories where refurbished isn't reliably cheaper. With smartphones the discount is dependable. With a PS5 or an Xbox Series X you genuinely have to do the arithmetic, and sometimes a discounted new console wins. A comparison site should be willing to say that out loud.

What holds regardless, whether you're after a refurbished PS5 or a refurbished Xbox Series X: put the same condition tier at Refurbed, Back Market, rebuy and asgoodasnew next to each other before you click anything. And open the box on delivery day rather than the following weekend. Those 14 days run from when you receive it, not from when you find the time.
