Refurbished Christmas gift 2026: check it before wrapping

Refurbished Christmas gift 2026: check it before wrapping

A refurbished Christmas gift needs switching on before wrapping. Leaving it untouched until Christmas delays setup, but doesn't automatically delay your return deadline. The recipient needs a usable device and purchase documents, not your personal accounts.

1

What needs to work before wrapping?

The recipient's mobile network, apps and existing accessories matter before ordering. For laptops, add keyboard layout and software requirements.

A welcome screen isn't proof that setup will work. Apple's preowned iPhone advice says not to buy a device with Activation Lock enabled (16 March 2026). If it shows "iPhone Locked to Owner", the seller needs to remove the lock; Apple advises returning such an online purchase. Carrier restrictions can also be checked in the device settings.

On Android, Google explains device protection: setup after a protected reset can require a previously linked account (accessed 7 October 2026). That account needs to be removed correctly. Passing on the previous owner's password isn't the answer. Our IMEI and activation-lock check covers the inspection in more detail.

The arrival check also covers charging, display, camera and supplied accessories. Battery promises are listing-specific. Don't assume a standard battery-health minimum; check the seller's written promise. Apple notes that health data may be unavailable for unknown batteries (source above, 16 March 2026).

Which documents go with the gift?

Buyer and recipient aren't automatically the same contracting party. The handover folder needs:

  • Receipt and order reference

  • Delivery date to track the withdrawal clock

  • Seller contact details

  • Saved listing and voluntary warranty terms

Your shop login stays private. Copies needn't include unnecessary payment details. Agree who contacts the seller if needed; don't assume a gift receipt automatically transfers every claim. Our purchase-proof guide explains the paperwork.

If you used your own account for the inspection, it needs removing. Apple's gift-transfer instructions cover signing out and erasing correctly (29 May 2026). An eSIM added for the check isn't part of the present either.

3

Does the withdrawal clock start at Christmas?

No. An ordinary consumer distance purchase from a professional seller normally carries a 14-day withdrawal period (Your Europe, checked 28 April 2026). For goods, German law normally starts it when you or a nominated person other than the carrier receives them; the prescribed notice must have been supplied (BGB Β§356, accessed 7 October 2026). Wrapping doesn't move that starting point.

This EU cooling-off rule doesn't cover private purchases. An ordinary in-store purchase doesn't automatically have a change-of-mind return right either; statutory exceptions and voluntary shop conditions need separate attention (Your Europe, source above). Our return-shipping explainer addresses the postage question.

We haven't verified an extended Christmas return policy for 2026. Any extension needs current written seller terms identifying eligible purchases and deadlines.

4

What if the gift has a fault?

Secondhand goods from a professional seller are covered by EU legal-guarantee rules; private purchases are excluded from those consumer rules. That doesn't mean private sellers can never have liability. A voluntary commercial warranty is a different promise and can't reduce statutory rights (Your Europe, checked 20 August 2026). Our statutory-guarantee and warranty explainer separates the terms.

Before ordering, ask what paperwork the recipient needs if there's a problem, and whether you must help as the original buyer. Then check the refurbished Christmas gift, record its delivery date and prepare the handover documents.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does withdrawal wait until the gift is opened?

No. For an ordinary consumer online purchase from a trader, receipt of the goods normally starts the clock, provided the prescribed notice has been supplied. Christmas isn't a new starting point. Any voluntary extension needs to appear in the seller's actual conditions.

Can I simply give someone an account-locked phone?

Not as a ready-to-use device. A previous account link can prevent setup. The seller needs to remove it correctly; handing over a previous owner's credentials isn't a safe solution.

Should I give the recipient my shop login with the receipt?

No. The receipt, order reference and seller's contact details can be passed on without personal credentials. Agree who helps with a claim if needed; the buyer and recipient aren't automatically the same contracting party.

Do private purchases carry the same consumer rights?

No. The EU consumer withdrawal and legal-guarantee rules described here cover professional sellers, not private sales. That doesn't automatically exclude other contractual or national rights.
