Buying a Refurbished FRITZ!Box: Check Connection, Provider Lock and Update Support

Buying a Refurbished FRITZ!Box: Check Connection, Provider Lock and Update Support

A refurbished FRITZ!Box only pays off if it fits your line, and so does a used FRITZ!Box from a private seller. A cable box won't run on a DSL line, and a former rental unit may not run on yours.

1

Does a refurbished FRITZ!Box fit DSL, cable or fiber?

Only if it's from your connection's model family: AVM builds separate lines for DSL, cable and fiber.

The FRITZ!Box 5530 Fiber connects to AON, GPON or XGS-PON fiber through an SFP module. The Federal Network Agency confirmed on January 22, 2025 that free choice of equipment applies to passive fiber networks too.

2

Can a used cable box still be registered with a provider?

Yes, the so-called provider lock. AVM's FAQ on free router choice says FRITZ!Box Cable models previously supplied as rental units via a provider can't be used on just any cable connection, router freedom under German law (section 73 TKG) or not.

Techbook advises noting the serial number and CM MAC address (on the back of the box) before activation. Ask the seller for the retail invoice and whether the box was deregistered with the old provider.

3

Does a used FRITZ!Box still get current FRITZ!OS versions?

It depends on the model. AVM's product support page lists the status; fixed end dates are gone, says netzwelt (November 30, 2022).

Old doesn't automatically mean abandoned. The FRITZ!Box 7490, then almost twelve years old, still got FRITZ!OS 7.60 on January 29, 2025, per teltarif, though not FRITZ!OS 8. That's no promise for the future.

4

Are the factory reset, power supply and login details all there?

The box should arrive reset, with power supply and cables. A factory reset wipes all settings, including DSL access, says heise (2018); then the credentials printed on the box apply again.

Internet login details come from your provider, which must supply them in text form, unprompted and free of charge, at contract signing (section 73 TKG). If your contract already runs, you may have to request them.

One catch: AVM's manufacturer's guarantee runs from the first purchase, not yours. From a dealer, the dealer's statutory warranty applies. Per the Verbraucherzentrale (consumer advice, as of November 24, 2025) it applies by law, unlike a voluntary guarantee, and for used goods the seller can limit it to one year. Private sales aren't covered on that page.

No invoice or deregistration for a cable box? Leave it, however cheap.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a used FRITZ!Box safe to use?

It depends on its update status, which AVM's support page shows per model. Rule of thumb, not an AVM statement: a box without updates shouldn't stay online.

What's the difference between a refurbished and a used FRITZ!Box?

A refurbished FRITZ!Box has been checked and reconditioned by a dealer, and a used one usually comes straight from the previous owner. What "checked" means is each dealer's call, so their stated condition and warranty terms count.

Can a former rental box be activated by my provider?

Don't count on it: AVM says former rental Cable models don't run on just any cable connection. Ask your provider before buying whether it will activate this exact box.
