Germany lags behind on refurbished smartphones. Only 25% have ever bought a refurbished device. France? 38%. We're dead last in Europe. That's according to a Vodafone Institute study with the Wuppertal Institute.
But 2026 is turning things around. Samsung enters the market. MediaMarkt expands. And suddenly everyone's talking about refurbished.

According to NIQ market research, the refurbished market now accounts for 10% of Germany's smartphone market. That's 1.8 million devices in twelve months. Q2 2025? 33% growth versus Q1. The market is accelerating.

And it keeps growing. Market forecasts estimate USD 3.01 billion market volume in 2025. By 2034, it should reach USD 10.2 billion. That's 14.5% annual growth for Germany's refurbished market.
Why Germans Were So Cautious
The Vodafone study calls Germans "the most cautious user group" in Europe. Surprising? Not really. We're the country that sells devices with screen protectors nobody ever removes. Everything needs to be perfect here. New, packaged, sealed.
Stiftung Warentest tested nine platforms in 2023. 45 devices total. Results were mixed. Seven phones were better than advertised. Nine had defects. Cameras didn't work, speakers were broken. No wonder many are skeptical. Receiving a broken smartphone is exactly the nightmare scenario that keeps people from buying refurbished.
But six platforms scored "good." Rebuy won the retailer category (grade 2.2). Back Market led marketplaces (grade 1.8).
2026 as a turning point for refurbished market Germany
2026 brings three major shifts.
Samsung launched in January its Certified Re-Newed program in Germany. Manufacturer-refurbished with the same warranty as new devices. Fresh IMEI number, latest software. What matters here: When the manufacturer itself sells refurbished, it legitimizes the entire market.
MediaMarkt made its move in 2025. 275% more remanufactured products sold. Launched its own refurbished label. When Germany's largest electronics retailer displays refurbished prominently in-store, next to new devices, that's a signal. Refurbished is no longer niche.
Rebuy offers 36 months warranty. Three times the standard. That directly addresses German concerns: security.
Who leads the refurbished market Germany?
According to e-commerce analysis, Refurbed leads in Germany. EUR 283 million revenue, 39% growth. Back Market follows with EUR 193 million, 11% growth.
In short: Refurbed growth is three times faster than Back Market, at least in Germany. Globally it's different, Back Market dominates there. But here? Refurbed leads the refurbished providers Germany.

The environmental impact
Each refurbished smartphone Germany saves approximately 77 kg of CO2 according to environmental studies. For comparison: That's about 310 miles of driving. 80% of emissions occur during production. Buying refurbished bypasses that phase entirely.
Scale that to 1.8 million devices: 138,600 tons less CO2 per year. In Germany alone. That's roughly what 30,000 average Germans produce annually.

The Vodafone study shows a clear generational gap. Gen Z: 37% have bought refurbished. Baby Boomers: only 18%.
But here's where it gets interesting: 81% of buyers would purchase refurbished again. Once convinced, Germans stick with it. The biggest hurdle isn't quality, it's making that first purchase.
The market is tipping
