Original or aftermarket? How to spot an original iPhone display on a refurbished phone

The phone arrives, the price was good, then the thought lands: is that display original, or is it a copy panel? On a refurbished iPhone you can settle that in minutes, with no tools.
Check 1: Parts and Service History, 30 seconds
Since iOS 15.2, Apple's Parts and Service History shows whether a fitted part is recognised as genuine. At launch that covered battery, display and camera (MacRumors, as of 08.12.2021). Coverage has grown since; check the phone, not a table.
Check 2: True Tone says less than people think
A missing True Tone toggle gets treated as proof online. It probably isn't. Apple announced in 2024 it would allow the feature with third-party parts (iFixit, as of 27.06.2024), though iFixit's September 2024 testing found it wasn't yet (iFixit, as of 18.09.2024). It depends on the iOS version and repair method.
Check 3: Stare at white, then drag to the edges
Open a blank note. A blue or yellow cast, flatter colour: the most common tells (iFixit user report, as of 12.07.2023 on an OLED replaced with an LCD). Then drag an icon into each corner. Stuttering touch near the edge means a cheap panel.
On Android none of this helps. There's no comparable owner-facing check (Samsung Community).
An aftermarket panel isn't a scam
Refurbed states it uses original manufacturer parts by default and falls back to equivalent non-OEM parts when the OEM part isn't purchasable (Refurbed FAQ). Back Market, rebuy and asgoodasnew publish no parts rule. The sellers' condition grades describe cosmetics, not part origin. A non-original part can touch your manufacturer warranty. If something feels off, contact the seller inside the return window.
